NHL 82-0 is the ultimate hockey history challenge. Your goal: assemble a six-player all-time roster across six positions, spanning every NHL era, and simulate an 82-game season. Can your dream team go 82-0? You get six rounds, six legends — and fate decides which franchise and era you draft from each time.
You must fill all six slots — Left Wing, Centre, Right Wing, Left Defence, Right Defence, and Goalie. Every player is locked to their natural position(s): Sidney Crosby plays only Centre, Martin Brodeur plays only Goalie, and Paul Coffey can slot in at either defence position. You can't place a player on a slot they can't play, so plan your roster around what positions are still open.
Each round, a decade and a franchise are randomly drawn for you. You then pick one available player from that team's roster in that era and assign them to an open position slot. The randomness is the whole game — no two runs are ever the same.
The game spans every franchise in NHL history, from Original Six clubs like the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs to modern powerhouses like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche. The same franchise can appear more than once across your six rounds.
Each player has a tier rating shown as dots (● = filled, ○ = empty). Five dots is elite — think Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux. Three dots is a dependable depth player. Stats shown (in Classic mode) are per-82-game averages for that player during that decade — goals, assists, and total points, normalized to an 82-game season for fair cross-era comparison. Hall of Fame inductees are marked with a gold HOF badge.
In Classic mode you start with one team skip and one decade skip. Use a team skip to re-draw a new franchise from the same era (helpful if your current team has no one who fits your open positions). Use a decade skip to re-draw both a new era and franchise entirely. Skips are precious — once used, they're gone for the rest of that game.
Classic mode — full stats are visible for every available player. Use points per 82 games, tier ratings, and HOF status to make the smartest pick each round.
IceIQ mode — all stats are hidden. You draft purely from memory and hockey instinct. No looking up numbers — just how well do you actually know your NHL history?
Same spin-and-draft gameplay, but flip the goal: build the most feared lineup in NHL history. Players are ranked by a Toughness Score — a blend of penalty minutes per 82 games and career fighting rate — so true enforcers and legendary fighters rise to the top. Goalies are rated by their glove-dropping reputation.
Your result shows a combined Toughness Score for your six-man lineup, along with a grade.
| 🥊 ALL-TIME ENFORCER LEGEND | 2,000+ — the rarest achievement. Six of the most feared men in hockey history. Qualifies for the fighter leaderboard. |
| GOON SQUAD | 1,500–1,999 — a legendary band of fighters and heavyweights. |
| HEAVYWEIGHTS | 1,100–1,499 — a serious physical presence every night. |
| PHYSICAL GRINDERS | 700–1,099 — tough enough to hold your own, with a few finesse players in the mix. |
| PUSHOVERS | Under 700 — way too much skill, not enough sandpaper. |
Hit 2,000+ to qualify for the all-time fighter leaderboard.
Every day at midnight UTC, a new Daily Challenge goes live. Everyone in the world gets the exact same decade and franchise draws, in the same order — seeded by the date. There are no skips in the Daily Challenge (it wouldn't be fair if some players skipped out of tough draws). You get one attempt per day. After finishing, share your result and compare rosters with other players who faced the same draws.
Your final roster earns a score out of 1000 and a grade based on how many wins your team would accumulate over an 82-game season. Wins are calculated from each player's historical output relative to the best players ever to play their position, with a small bonus for all-time legend status. The stronger your roster across all six positions, the higher your win total.
| 🏆 PERFECTION | 82–0 — the rarest achievement. A perfect dynasty across all six positions. |
| DYNASTY | 70+ wins — dominant and historic. One of the all-time great rosters. |
| CUP CONTENDER | 58–69 wins — a serious Stanley Cup contender every single year. |
| PLAYOFF TEAM | 44–57 wins — solidly in the playoffs, but a few weak spots holding you back. |
| REBUILDING | Under 44 wins — tough draws or tough decisions. Time to try again. |
Only Classic mode scores qualify for the all-time leaderboard. You need 75+ wins to be considered for a top-100 ranking.
NHL 82-0 is a browser-based fantasy hockey challenge built around one question: if fate handed you a random NHL franchise and era, could you still build a perfect six-player lineup? Each run gives you six rounds, six roster spots, and a fresh set of decade-franchise draws from hockey history.
The game is more than a random picker. Player pools are built from historical NHL rosters, position eligibility, Hall of Fame status, era context, and per-82-game production so a 1980s scorer, a 2000s two-way center, and a modern goalie can be compared inside one draft format.
Classic mode shows the numbers, IceIQ hides the stats for a pure memory test, Daily Challenge gives every player the same draw, and Toughest Team mode flips the goal toward penalty minutes, fighting history, and old-school intimidation.
